A visit to the amazing Agra Fort – A mesmerising construction with the magnificent Taj over shadowing it, the Agra Fort is one of the finest Mughal forts in the country. The gigantic redsandstone fort, standing tall on the bank of the Yamuna River, was begun by Emperor Akbar in 1565. Later on, his grandson Shah Jahan made additions in white marble. It was mainly built as a military structure which was later transformed by Shah Jahan into a palace. Ironically, it later turned into his gilded prison for eight years after his son Aurangzeb seized power in 1658.

A visit to the DiwanIAm (hall of public audience) – This is considered as the earliest manifestation of emperor Shah Jehan’s passion for marble. The place was used by the emperor to address the general public as well as the nobility.
A visit to the DiwanIKhas (hall of private audience) The royal enclosure lies right behind the DiwanIAam. A small yet grand singlestorey structure of DiwanIKhas stands beautifully at the northern corner. It includes the most splendidly sculptured and most photographed stone column at the center of the hall. It is also the famous IbadatKhana where Emperor Akbar initiated religious discourses amongst diverse religious groups Hindu, Muslim, Jain, and Jesuit etc.

Day 06 / Haridwar Rishikesh Delhi – Departure

A drive to Rishikesh Also revered as the ‘abode of sages’, Rishikesh is a city located at the confluence of the Chandrabhaga and Ganga. This place is believed to be the place where ‘Hrishikesh’ (God) had appeared as an answer to the hard penances by Rabhiya Rishi. It is also the starting point for the Char dham pilgrims. Rishikesh also makes for an ideal spot for the people interested in meditation, yoga and other aspects of Hinduism.

A visit to Laxman Jhula – This is one of the most popular sites of Rishikesh. A hanging bridge across Ganga, Laxman Jhula measures around 450 feet in length and located at a height of 70 feet from the river. The legends have it that once Laxman, the younger brother of Lord Rama, crossed river Ganga at the same site. It was a jute bridge. Hence, the bridge was named as ‘Laxman Jhula’. With the passage of time, the jute bridge eroded. In 1939, a new bridge was constructed of iron along the path.

A visit to Bharat Mandir – Located at the banks of River Ganga, Bharat Mandir is one of the oldest temples of Rishikesh. Situated right in the centre of the old town, the temple was built by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. In 1398 AD, Tamur Lane devastated this building. Located in the heart of the city, Bharat Mandir is a must visit sacred site in the city.
